Off-Slope Attractions
Red River calls itself "The Ski Town of the Southwest" & mountain fun is the primary activity here. After the lifts close down, this little old mining town perks up. Visitors to Red River will find dozens of inviting shops along Main Street to explore. There are restaurants serving everything from native northern New Mexico cuisine to the finest Angus New York strip steaks. Late night revelers can two-step into the wee hours of the morning at Red River's wild-west saloons.

What to do:

  • Take a snowmobile tour in the mountains around town.
  • Try cross country skiing at Enchanted Forest XC ski area.
  • How about some ice-fishing at nearby Eagle Nest Lake or fly fishing the Cimarron, Red River or Rio Grande.
  • Snow shoe in the beautiful Carson National Forest.
  • Wander the many shops along Main Street.
  • Visit the Red River State Trout Hatchery.

Everything is within walking distance in this old mining town. Along historic Main Street you'll find great shopping, dining, saloons, museums, and lodging. Kids will enjoy arcades and more.

While plenty of folks head directly to the mountains for outdoor adventure, we know more than a few who don't have to bundle up or gear up to have a great time. If you're one of those types, then mosey down Main Street and visit the shops and galleries. Hungry? Our restaurants serve up tasty down-home cooking, spicy New Mexican fare and elegant meals, too. Kids from one to 101 will have a great time at the Black Mountain Play House where they can play pool, ping-pong, video games and skate. Take in a Wild West shoot-out at Frye's Old Town. After that, sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery in our town park.

Sundown brings everyone back to town to have dinner, swap stories, and enjoy live music. In the winter, daring skiers blaze down the mountain with flaming torches and a dazzling fireworks display wraps up another perfect day in Red River.

Restaurants
The Chalet Cafeteria serves breakfast and lunch. The Ski Tip Restaurant located at 10,350 feet serves lunch, beer and wine, and great views. The Lift House Bar, located at the base of the main lift, is a great spot for lunch and spirits or an apres ski libation.

After Dark
Go two steppin' at The Motherlode Saloon or the Bull-O-Woods Bar. Main Street is lined with great eateries like Texas Red's Steakhouse and Capo's Italian Restaurant.

Around Red River
If you're up for a drive, pack a picnic and tour New Mexico's famous Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, an 84-mile scenic route that circles Wheeler Peak and takes you past Eagle Nest Lake, the Rio Grande Gorge, Taos, Taos Pueblo, the BLM Wild Rivers Recreation Area, and the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial. And you're bound to be in Red River for one of our many special events. Throughout the year we host music festivals, chili cook-offs, craft fairs, car shows, parades and more. You're always invited to join in the fun!

Winter brings snow and good times to Red River. Try snowmobiling along hundreds of miles of scenic back-country terrain and groomed trails. Bring your own machine or hire one of our professional guides to take you up to new heights atop 11,200 foot Greenie Peak.

If you're up for more exercise, cross-country ski along miles of groomed and natural trails at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area on 9,800 foot Bobcat Pass. Snow shoeing is another great way for the whole family to experience the beauty of nature and get a work out while they're at it. If you're a "first timer" at any of these sports, we'd be glad to show you the ropes and rent you some equipment, too.
